Self-Care & Reflection

It’s amazing what taking time for yourself (self-care) and your needs can do, isn’t it? For a good chunk of this year, starting this past June, I took a step back and focused on how I was feeling, where I was mentally, and what I could do to separate all the negative vibes from the good and just work on myself. I’m sure many of us can relate to somebody telling us “Make sure to take time for yourself” or “Take a step back, and focus on yourself,” but that’s easier said than done. Self-care takes time, effort, personal acceptance, and incorporating all the other external factors we deal with on a daily basis. I can tell you right now, for myself, this whole year it wasn’t easy practicing self-care, but I’m beyond glad I took the time to practice telling myself “It’s ok to take time and do this” or “I give myself permission to take a day off and do something different.” Too often athletes of all ages and at different stages in their careers may lean towards focusing on the negatives and allow these thoughts to impact how progress and success is measured or achieved.

As individuals in the world of sports, we devote so much time to the sports we’re involved in, whether you’re a player, coach, trainer, etc. To take time for yourself, work on yourself, and understand where you’re at mentally is not being selfish. It’s also not a sign of weakness. If anything, it’s a sign of strength, showing you’re able and have the discipline to work on becoming the best version of yourself.

As the new year is about to begin, take time for yourself and reflect on the year you’ve had. Think about small goals or habits you can develop to practice self-care. Start small and discover what suits you. After all, we’re all different and we each have our own versions of self-care to help ourselves, especially when it comes to mental health. No matter what point in your career you’re at, be assured that taking the time to reflect and focus on the development of positive tools to boost your mental health can be a game changer for you this year.
